Retirement isn’t in my DNA, dying on the job seems like the best option.

This morning I bought myself a copy of a book that I had previously given to my various grandchildren.

It kind of jumped out at me from a sea of possible books and stopped me in my tracks.

What do you do with an idea?

Everything surrounding us has once been an idea. These ideas have likely been executed with the help of brains that are more comfortable with a linear process than a boundless vision.

Whether you believe in the right/left brain explanation of thinking styles, there is evidence to show that not everyone has all the skills required to have an idea and execute it.

What my team and I at Unlock Innovation have set out to investigate, is what might have been overlooked in terms of innovation capacity in New Zealand. No financial or research incentives can fly unless we acknowledge that there are two sets of thinkers in the game.

So, what is involved in founding a business focused on a purpose bigger than yourself. Ok so, if I was building a rocket to mars, I could quite easily claim that I was working on something bigger than me. A higher purpose bigger than my own personal ambition. However, and it may be a particularly female perspective, but I and my team are more interested in getting the fundamentals in place for innovation.

Not everyone has the space, time or experience to do this. On the many tough days when I fear I’m not enough, it’s good to be able to remind myself that I am focused on a huge issue that is hiding in plain sight.

Over the years we have seen innovation initiatives come and go. From R&D tax credits, funding grants, the setup of Crown Research Institutes, and the like.

Innovation that sticks is created through diametrically different thinking. In our case we have a laser focus on the dyslexic mind, being the generators of many fantastic ideas. Those idea generators might struggle without those who can nurture it through the many ups and downs and channels to success.

So, Unlock Innovation seeks to create mutual respect and therefore foundations for ideas and commercial ambition to flourish. We know where the left brainers are, but the right brainers have been hiding too long.

“And then, I realised what you do with an idea… you change the world”. – Kobi Yamada
